Pamukale in a day

Day #6 - Pamukale

We spent a few hours on a bus to pamukale, which is pretty much a tourist town, to check out the travertines, which are calcium deposits to make the side of a hill look like a ski hill...

It was a super hot day, and we were dying up the hill, even though it was already almost five pm.

About twelve years ago, this site was declared a world heritage site by unesco, so they made changes to the tourist attraction in order to preserve it. If this area was untouched by humans, the hills would be completely white, but because ppl walk around there and take a dip in the pools, parts of the calcium deposits have become a nasty brownish.

The walk up was interesting. You cant wear your shoes into thr water, so you must take your shoes off. The calcium deposits look slippery, but im fact they almsot grip your feet. Its almost like walking on a massive pumas stone. The problem is ...is when you step on the little rocks that jab hard into the soles of your feet.

Intrepid is all about preserving the world, our tour group did not go bathing in the pools as many others were doing, we just took a step in.

My group has now dubbed the pics i take of myself with the outstretched arm as "teresa shots" lol. Im pretty sure im not the only one who takes these shots, but aparently the only one of my group...lol
This next pic of the heropolis theatre. This was once the city that was dedicated to the Goddess Hera, the wife of zeus. The theatre holds then thousand people, not as big as the one in ephiseus, but it is the most well preserved theatre in the world. Almost all of the steps are original. I swear these olden day ppl must have been really tall cuz i had to jump to get from one step to another...

I dont know if you can see me, but i am sitting down on the steps in the middle of the pic...

Taking thi pic was slightly freaky because it was kind of windy and i almost got blown off the end there. It was reaaaaally high up!

After leaving the theatre, we went to explore the rest of thr grounds of heropolis, just some random ruins and trees all around...
In case you didnt read my earlier posts, these small wide pics are my panoramic pics, but blogpress wont let me post them on at a bigger size :(

I don't quite no why, but i've always thought the solo tree is such a beautiful thing....

Not long after, the sun began to set...from the time i was walking through heropolis..all the way to when i made my way bak to the traverstines.

I lovvveeee this next one...

Sun rays! Gorgeous

Panoramic view of the sunset over the traverstines....Have you ever seen anything more beautiful?

Sorry for the bombardment of sunset pics, but i just couldnt pick which one was my fav.
After the sun had set, we slowly made our way down the same way we walked up.

Not quite sure what im trying to do there....

It got darker and darker on our way down. The darker it got, the more painful it was for my feet since i was no longer able to see those tiny sharp pebbles. Lol but on the bright side, they had these massive lights were we were able to play with our shawdows...

All in all, it was a fun day. I didnt really read my trip itinerary in detail so i had no idea we were coming here to this place. It ws a very pleasent surprise and i am so happy to have gotten to see the sunset here. Off to Kayakoy tomorrow!

Location:Pamukale, turkey
